Plywood

Plywood is a strong and durable material that can withstand the weight of kitchen appliances and utensils. It is also resistant to warping and cracking, making it a popular choice for modern kitchens. Plywood is a type of engineered wood that is made up of thin layers of wood veneers that are glued together with the grains of adjacent layers perpendicular to each other. This cross-grain construction gives plywood its strength and stability. By gluing together thin layers of wood veneer, it makes the timber less susceptible to expansion and contraction due to changes in temperature and humidity.

The quality and durability of plywood depend on the type of wood used, the number of layers, and the thickness of each layer. Plywood can come in different grades, with A-grade being the highest quality and D-grade being the lowest. The thickness of plywood can also vary, ranging from less than 1/8 inch to over 1 inch. is made by gluing together thin layers of wood veneer, which makes it less susceptible to expansion and contraction due to changes in temperature and humidity.

At Shoreditch, we have an affinity for plywood and take pleasure in utilising it a diverse range of projects.

Laminated Plywoods

Laminated veneer lumber (LVL), is a type of engineered wood product that is made by layering thin sheets of wood veneer together with glue. The sheets are stacked in a way that the grain of each layer runs perpendicular to the layer above and below it, which helps to increase the strength and stability of the final product.

The resulting plywood is stronger and more stable than solid wood of the same thickness and can be used for a variety of applications, including construction, furniture, and decorative paneling. Laminate plywood is often chosen for its strength, durability, and aesthetic appeal, as it can be made in a variety of finishes and can mimic the look of more expensive materials such as hardwood.

Laminate plywood is available in a range of sizes and thicknesses, and can be custom-made to meet specific project requirements. Laminated fronts lend a contemporary and polished appearance to your kitchen cabinets. You'll find a broad spectrum of colours to pick from, allowing you to select the ideal complement to your kitchen's aesthetic. Laminated fronts are also simple to keep tidy and in excellent condition, making them a favoured option for households with busy lifestyles.

Solid Timber

When using solid timber, it's important to choose a species that is suitable for your particular project. Some factors to consider include the timber's strength, durability, and appearance.

Make sure that the timber you use has been sustainably grown and harvested. Look for timber that has been certified by organizations like the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) or the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC).

Recycled Timber

Shoreditch embraces the use of recycled timbers in their projects. By giving old timber a new life, you're helping to reduce the demand for new timber and minimizing the amount of waste that goes into landfills.

If you're using recycled timber, it's important to source it from a reputable supplier. Look for reclamation yards that have a good reputation for supplying high-quality timber that has been salvaged from old buildings or structures.

Some species of timber are particularly popular for recycling, such as Kauri, Rimu, and Oak. These species may be more expensive than other types of recycled timber, but they are often prized for their unique character and beauty.

Alternatively, you may be able to use timber that you already have on hand. This could include spare weatherboards or lining boards that you've kept over the years, or even timber from an old fence or deck.

When working with recycled timber, be prepared for some challenges. The timber may be irregular in shape, have knots or other imperfections, or require some extra preparation before it can be used.

Oils

Shoreditch utilizes Osmo oil products to achieve a stunning and authentic natural finish on their products. Osmo oil offers certified stains and wood waxes in an array of colors. For a transparent finish, Shoreditch uses Semi Matt Poly X oil.

The finish is exceptionally tough and robust, making it highly durable and hardwearing. Once cured, it's deemed food safe and boasts outstanding water and stain resistance. It enhances the natural character of the wood and withstands liquids like wine, tea, coffee, water, and fruit juices. The finish features a microporous breathable surface that won't crack, peel or flake.
